The project is about Kuroshitsuji’s Fics I’ve Always Wanted To Write But Never Did. Not sure which ones I’ll do in English and which ones I’ll do in Spanish.

Since most of them are romance, and it’s fanfiction, I called the project Eros Mutation.

If Sebastian is supposed to maybe be around 600 yrs old (vague tweet, can’t be too clear, what if The Plot needs him to know something from ancient times one day :^) ) but his last contract was in the late 1700’s, and the songs hinted that he slept for “a long time” did Sebastian just... sleep 1/6th of his life away in one sitting. Like that’s a long time. Even if you are immortal lmao. HC: Seb was depressed, before OC, because that would be interesting. One hell of a depression nap.

I can see that happening. He just gets depressed from boredom and takes one hell of a nap- next thing he knows, it’s 1886. And he’s like, “time to eat.” Food is the only thing that convinces him to wake up. And him taking a century long nap is something plausible- it’d explain so much.

Sebastian said it rather bluntly. Those poor servants must be majorly confused at this point. There’s a boy that just looks like their master claiming to be the real Ciel - openly admitting that he had died at some point, a crazy old man bragging about it, and Sebastian just told everyone he’s a grim reaper. And that’s before a crazy redhead with the same name as Madam Red’s butler and wearing her coat jumped through a window, and another guy walked in talking about spanking someone.

One thing that really struck me in Chapter 140 is the juxtaposition between Sebastian’s arrogance at the start of the contract and his anxiety in the present. Look at this:

He’s so sure of himself here. He thinks this contract will be nothing – that he’ll bow to the whims of a child for awhile before going home again having had a good meal and a bit of a laugh. This is a game for him. What could possibly go wrong?

But here:

Here his cockiness has all but vanished. A soul he’d long since consumed has come back to life, his friend(?) is dead, and now he has to face the reaper he’s already lost to twice. Then of course there’s his physical appearance: he’s soaking wet and his hair is dishevelled - not at all the immaculate Sebastian from the past.

By this point in the series Sebastian has already tasted failure a number of times and almost lost his master on several occasions more. There’s been signs of Sebastian’s confidence wavering for awhile now, but never has it been as clear as in this chapter. He’s on high alert, he’s anxious, and I’m going to make a bold claim here: Sebastian Michaelis is frightened.

Sebastian’s character has been developing extraordinarily slowly for a main character, but when you look at chapters like this one you can see just how much he’s changed. He’s still overly arrogant and is the literal embodiment of secondhand embarrassment, but he’s clearly learning that he can’t throw cutlery at every problem that arises and expect certain victory.

Sebastian is learning to fear and I love it.

Back in the day, I remember saying that if the murder of Agni was the twin’s doing, then it would have had more sense to kill Soma (or both, since you couldn’t kill Soma without killing Agni). Not only would’ve been more heart-breaking by the sole fact Soma was younger, it would’ve also tied Ciel and R!Ciel possible new dynamic tighter.

R!Ciel is willing to kill anyone that gets in the middle of his relationship with his brother, and that includes his brother’s friends and allies. (not confirmed)

Instead, Agni was killed. We get this scene:

Which brings my point further. It was weird for a narrative that focuses on Ciel, like Kuroshitsuji shamelessly does, to kill Agni, because the only person who has a connection with Agni, aside from Soma, of course, is Sebastian. This doesn’t have much sense in an arc that focuses on Ciel’s past and Ciel’s character. Ciel certainly doesn’t care about Agni, he cares about Soma. And this puts just a tiny bit of fleeting drama on their relationship because we all know that as soon as Soma finds out that there’s an evil twin out there and that it was not Ciel’s fault, he’ll side up with Ciel again. Doing any other thing seems inconsistent with his character. It’s also weird of the culprits not to kill Soma, you would’ve thought they’d want to kill the master i.e the one who has the power, in the case this wasn’t R!Ciel’s idea.

Unless it was meant to tie Sebastian in the currently developing narrative.

Sebastian now has some sort of personal grudge against R!Ciel, and by extension Undertaker. Obviously, Sebastian will fight R!Ciel and Undertaker if he needs to, but this is a given, considering Ciel, his contract master, will probably want to get Undertaker wreck for turning his brother into a zombie. A fight between UT and Sebastian would be centered around Ciel, ordered by Ciel. ~~Sebastian is an over glorified hitman, in this case, just change money for a soul.~~

I mention this because there wouldn’t be a problem with Sebastian not having a personal stake in this fight… if he weren’t a supposed main character. Except for Agni and what he represents. Having personal stakes in the battle makes him have a more active role.

Not only Agni was his first friend, Agni represents Sebastian’s butler aesthetics. Agni was an exemplary butler in Sebastian’s eyes because his master’s safety and happiness were his top priority. Sebastian will definitely go full force on Undertaker.

If Sebastian wins the fight, then he was able to uphold his friend’s teachings and his butler aesthetics. If he doesn’t (and lives), he failed, and this will set a difference between Agni’s recent death and Sebastian’s failings, rendering Sebastian a bad butler (according to himself).

It would bring the discussion of his true nature at the front of the narrative: can Sebastian, as a demon, be a good butler by his own definition? And, of course, it begs another question:

How much damage would do to Sebastian’s ego losing his butler aesthetics against someone who isn’t a butler?

Well, the way it happened significantly affected Ciel enough to me. I think he cares about Agni because of Soma. Now Soma is fucked up and he’s fucked up because of him so all that sympathy and guilt he has been pushing down inside of himself for so long will finally explode at the surface. He has been fucking up people left and right, then pretending like he doesn’t care. But this right here is his best friend, something he has also been pretending is not true. It’s just weird because we’ve hardly gotten any reaction from Sebastian. I think this should be affecting them equally. In different ways, but equally if that makes sense. This was definitely supposed to be a calculated attack to hit the fam hard. And one of Undertaker’s methods to take out this powerful demon is to distract him, right? Um, Yana, do you see what you could be doing here?

I agree! But maybe Yana was trying to portray that. It’s a move that was indeed supposed to hit our main duo at the same time (I’m actually trying to defend Yana, lol. I know, shocking).

Ciel saw Soma losing someone he cares about –> Ciel knows how that feels,

Sebastian lost his first friend and butler role model –> Sebastian needs to uphold those ideals/now he knows to grieve

I just meant that in a narrative focused in a single character, and more important, focused on the twins, it may have been a bit more… logical? To kill Soma instead. (This is totally super subjective, lol). I don’t think it’s that bad of a move to not have him killed because it means Ciel will have to deal with angst, and that’s always interesting. It just strikes me as an awkward choice “I don’t like people close to my brother! I know, I’ll kill my brother’s friend’s butler after spooking the friend!” of it was from the cult “This guy has connections with Phantomhive/Special blood/he’s a high ranking noble! Let’s kill him. Welp, we killed his butler, it seems okay for me”.

There are a lot of reasons in-universe for this to happen. Agni gave a good fight and R!Ciel wanted to make the “Who took the candy out my tummy?” message first and foremost, and Seb and Ciel were about to reach the manor and they needed to run. But the reason why it was written that way irl may have been about connecting Sebastian in all of this mess.

I really do believe that it could be like you say, maybe UT ordered directly to kill Agni because he wanted to destabilize Sebastian. But more than reasoning about what happened in-universe, I was trying to discuss the meta reason, i.e, why the author decided she needed to kill Agni ~~and not Soma or both of them~~, and how that impacts the over-arching narrative. (I got side-tracked because that’s the way I am, lol. I should’ve cut Ciel and Soma out of the discussion entirely).

And I do think Sebastian reacted! I mean, it doesn’t satisfy me as a reader, but why held Agni like he did! There was no need to get his gloves bloody for Agni! Or to kneel like that while praising the thing that connected them. I think it was meaningful in some way, and unless the manga explicitly disproves it, I don’t see why I can’t believe so.

Sorry bae, didn’t realize you wanted an opinion. :3 I totally agree on Seb being lawful ‘cause he’s standing by his aesthetic at all times and damn if this isn’t mentioned every three chapters or so xD as for UT definitely chaotic 'cause he wants the Phantomhives to uphold an aesthetic that himself went as far as to throw away through the window because #not convenient for what he’s trying to do!*

I’m always okay with opinions! Especially about characters like UT, that while I like, are not precisely my favs (so I could be biased against them :o)

Oh, and now I realize! Shinigami are supposed to bring order, and demons are chaotic by nature if we take William’s words at face value. That means one of the central conflicts of this manga is a chaotic shinigami and a lawful demon, two contradictory things by nature, fighting over some bratty kid. It’s clever.

Would it be accurate to call bad bangs grease boy Undertaker “insane evil” and bad bangs clean hair Sebastian “sane evil”? UT didn’t set out to do evil, but he sure does it a lot. So does Seb, but he does it with intention. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also you can reply to this when you feel like it, no pressure. Life is important too. :D

I wouldn’t call it inaccurate. It really just depends on how you interpret UT’s actions.

I don’t think UT is insane. I think he just doesn’t care. “Not setting out to do evil” but not caring if you do, is a particular kind of malice that needs cold thinking. This isn’t a plan he thought one night and came to fruition randomly. He’d need to put a lot of time and effort in his plan. I’m not of the thought he’s delusional. He’s very clear in what he’s doing, his purpose, and how far he’s willing to take his ideas further.

Sebastian is definitely saner since he’s not that chaotic. Whatever wrongs he does is because he wants to get a kick off Ciel’s face, or is following his direct orders and letting himself go because he has the opportunity.

So Sebastian evilness is more… restrained? Whereas UT is just wild. In d&d alignments, UT is a chaotic and Sebastian is a lawful.
